Summer Internship with Kent State University Fashion Merchandising Student

My name is Giovonna Fulena, and I am a KSU Fashion Merchandising student doing my summer internship at Diane’s Boutique. Just last fall, I spent a semester studying in one of the fashion capitals of the world, NYC! While there, I was fortunate enough, to gain an internship with a showroom that taught me so much about that end of the industry.  I am so excited to expand my knowledge here at Diane’s Boutique. I have been interning here for about a month and have already learned so much!

Over the course of the month I have been able to act as a buyer with several different reps from lines such as, Accessorizeit and Frank Lyman. One rep pulled right up to the boutique in his HUGE van packed with a couple different lines! It was an easy and organized way to buy and sell.

Just last week, Diane took me to a buyers market in Pittsburgh, I was thrilled to be able to act as a buyer and see how that aspect of the industry works. I was even able to act as Diane’s personal barbie doll so she could get a better idea of what the clothes looked like on a body. At the buyers market I was able to get a better idea of what goes on behind the scenes with the pricing and payments. A buyers market is definetly a great place to network! A few companies passed on their business cards for me to pass on to my classmates for possible internships.

Visuals and creating presentations have been my favorite part of the fashion industry, thus far, and I have had a few opportunities to work with that. I have been creating coupons and sending out emails notifying customers of the new summer merchadise!

To me, the fashion industry is ever changing and there is always something new to learn and experience, so I am extremely excited to learn more about the ever changing fashion industry.  Over the past month I have learned so much from two very experienced woman in the fashion industry and I am exciting to continue to expand my knowledge of the fashion industry at Diane’s Boutique!

What’s in for Fall 09!

The shoulder pad is back and bigger than ever. However, this year’s pads will mostly be confined to highly structured dresses, suits, jackets and coats. Blouses will remain romantic with softer lines and lots of draping, shirring, and pleating to accent a woman’s body. Wrap fronts in both shirts and dresses will hide a myriad of figure flaws in order to give women more self-confidence and drama.

Layers will continue but will be more put together to express an entire style rather than just for fun. Slim silhouettes replace the more evened out ones of recent years, which means that the skinny jean will continue to be strong, as will leggings and pants that are cut close to the body. Tight fitting pencil skirts will find their way into just about every woman’s wardrobe. The length, however, will vary depending upon the woman’s own style and personal taste. Some will border on minis, while others will hit around the knee, mid calf or even slightly below.

The bold prints and geometric forms that became popular this past spring and that continued throughout the summer will flow right into fall.

Beautiful faux furs will offer women more coat varieties than ever before, and they will also take on new, unusual colors and shapes, including the old fashioned fur stole. Luscious leather vests, jackets and coats, both real and fake, will became a wardrobe standard.

Boots will take on a whole new meaning in 2009.

Handbags will be the most important accessory for this fall. Look for them to be heavily adorned with studs, beads, and jeweled accessories, for unusual shapes, and for all sizes from wallet to tote. There will be ruffles, fringe, pleats, and metallics as well as leather, furs, and other unusual fabric blends and microfibers.

Jewelry will remain as important as always, although the accent may be less on the “bling” factor and more on the edgy design. Bold cuffs still rule the roost.

Hats will once again become chic and although not all women will wear them, there will be enough edgy females out there to spice of the fashion world.

Color trends for Fall

Trends of Fall 09 are significantly different than the first part of the year.  Color is still crucial.  Pastels are giving way to bolder and deeper earthier shades.  The Summer key limes are now deep olive tones.  Pastel lavenders  move into royal purples. Pinks will step up from bold fuschia to berry.  Red will continue to be important.  Deeper yellow, corals and oranges will kept the beautiful color they have enjoyed throughout the year. However, look for some to turn into more of a burnt sienna.
